Thailand Open: Sai Praneeth tests positive for Covid-19, Srikanth may also pull out | Badminton News – Trendy Cow

HYDERABAD: The novel coronavirus came back to haunt the Indian badminton team again. After the high drama last week, it is reliably learnt that men’s singles shuttler B Sai Praneeth tested positive for Covid-19.
Sai is scheduled to play Daren Liew of Malaysia in the first round of the Thailand Open in Bangkok on Wednesday. Though the official announcement is yet to be made, sources said that Sai will pull out of the event.
The bronze medallist at the World Championships tested positive twice and is now quarantined in a Bangkok hospital. Srikanth, who shared the room with Sai is now isolated and may not participate in the tournament anymore.
“Sai tested positive twice and he was taken to the hospital. They said that all the Indian shuttlers have to undergo Covid-19 test again tomorrow. Srikanth is isolated and he will be withdrawn from the tournament,” an Indian player told ToI from Bangkok.
In case if Srikanth is withdrawn, he may not be able to compete in the next week’s BWF Finals. Only Srikanth has a chance to qualify for this event. Sindhu may qualify if she does well in the ongoing tournament.
Last Tuesday, Sai Nehwal and HS Prannoy were taken to hospital after the authorities declared that they had tested positive. However, the two players were cleared by evening after a high-level medical team said that they are carrying the dead cells of coronavirus as they contracted Covid-19 a month back. Both the shuttlers played the rescheduled matches, but did not progress further in the tournament.
